A 2022 survey found that Gen Z girls (ages 15-19) show unprecedented interest in activism, yet few see themselves as future political candidates (Edelman & Girl Scouts, 2022).
Gen Z is adept in using technology and social media to understand and comment on what they are seeing in society. More than 65% conduct their activism online (United Way, 2024).
More than half of Gen Zers (51%) have participated in rallies or protests to support specific causes or social issues (United Way, 2024).
And Yet
Parents are less likely to engage in conversations about politics with girls compared with boys (American University, 2013).
Despite high levels of civic engagement, girls and young women continue to see few leaders who look like them in public office. (CIRCLE, Tufts University, 2013).
Girls are significantly less likely than boys to aspire to run for office, despite similar levels of civic engagement (Lawless & Fox).
